NJ Academy of Science Advancement of Science Award


Award Purpose

This award honors scientists, engineers, STEM educators, leaders, spokespeople or professional organizations that have demonstrated excellence in science and have developed an outstanding contribution to knowledge or support in the biological, physical, mathematical, or engineering sciences. 

Eligibility

The nominee must be a NJ Academy of Science member and NJ resident. Nominations may be made by anyone, however, self-nominations are not accepted for this award. 

Nominations may be received for New Jersey resident scientists, STEM professional and for organizations, for a specific STEM awareness action. Nominations may be received for distinguished scientists or scholars, though that is not a requirement for award selection.

The award is granted by the NJ Academy of Science every 4 years, starting 2020. 

Nomination Process

Nominations are made by the completion of the nomination form . The form requests the following information:

  • Name and address of the nominee;
  • Name and address of the nominator;
  • A brief statement (no more than 300 words) describing the action of the nominee which is proposed for recognition;
  • General background information about the nominee, including a vita, links to press or other articles relevant to the nomination (not to exceed three pages); 
  • A list of three references. The references should be familiar with the actions of the nominee which have been proposed for recognition; and
  • Given that the review of nominations may require reference checks and discussions about controversial matters, the consent of the nominee to be considered for the award should be obtained by the nominator and recorded in the nomination packet.

    Nomination Form

  • The submission for next NJAS Advancement of Science Award nominee begins May 20, 2023. Deadline of submission  will be  January 5, 2024.  Celebratory announcement of winner will be on August 19, 2024. 

2020 Nominee - Inaugural Advancement of Science Award


Dr. Dipak Sarkar, D. Phil., Ph.D.

Dr. Sarkar has made multiple seminal discoveries on the impact of excessive alcohol on endocrine and neuroendocrine regulation of cell function and metabolism, he identified the role of hypothalamic neurohormones in the regulation of reproductive activity, stress response, immune function and cancer.  These outstanding discoveries deserve recognition by the NJ Academy of Science.
